การใช้คำว่า "call" ในภาษาอังกฤษนั้นมีอยู่หลากหลายวิธี คำว่า call นั้นมีความหมายได้หลายอย่าง ขึ้นอยู่กับสถานการณ์ที่ใช้ ดังนั้น จึงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญนะคะน้อง ๆ ที่จะต้องเข้าใจความหมายและนำมาใช้ให้ถูกต้องตามหลักการของภาษา ความหมายของคำว่า call ในพจนานุกรมภาษาอังกฤษได้ให้ความหมายไว้ดังนี้
call (1) - VI. - เรียก
Syn. :: shout; call out; cry out
call (2) - VT. - โทรศัพท์ไปหา
Syn. :: telephone; call up; ring; phone
call (3) - VI. - โทรศัพท์หา
Syn. :: contact; exchange signals
วิธีการใช้
1. call something or someone X : to characterize as; to say a person or thing is X เป็นการเรียก... คนนั้น หรือสิ่งนั้น
He called the plan overly optimistic. [He said the plan was overly optimistic.]
He called the president's remarks simplistic. [He said the president's remarks were simplistic.]
She called him an idiot. [She said he was an idiot]
2. call for something : to demand; require; ask for forcefully; need ใช้ในความหมายว่าต้องการออกคำสั่ง
The magazine called for his resignation. [demanded]
He called for stricter accounting standards. [asked for]
The situation calls for diplomacy. [needs]
The job calls for computer skills. [requires]
The president has called for passage of his tax plan. [asked for]
3. call on [or upon] somebody to do something : to appeal to; ask ใช้เมื่อต้องการเรียกคนบางคนมาทำงานให้
He called on Americans to devote a portion of their time to volunteer activities.
During World War II, the Red Cross was called on to provide blood for the troops.
He has been called on to act as mediator in the negotiations.
I call upon all Americans to help in this struggle.
4. calls [noun] for something : requests for something หมายถึงการเรียก...(นามธรรม) บางอย่าง เพื่อที่ต้องการสื่อสารติดต่อ
There have been repeated calls for cooperation by the Democrats.
5. call someone on the carpet : to ask someone to explain his actions; to reprimand [The person who calls someone on the carpet must be a person in authority such as a government official, a manager, supervisor, etc.]
เป็นคำ slang หมายถึงการให้คนคนหนึ่งอธิบายถึงสาเหตุการกระทำของเขา
จะเป็นการเรียกจากผู้ที่มีอำนาจใหญ่กว่า
The industry is being called on the carpet for its recent practices. [The government is asking them to explain and justify their recent practices.]
6. call someone in : to bring someone in to help or to consult with เป็นการเรียกเข้ามาพบเพื่อขอคำปรึกษา
He called in his top scientists to help find a solution to the problem.
7. call something in : to withdraw from circulation เป็นการใช้เพื่อต้องการสื่อว่าจะยกเลิกบางอย่าง..
The old currencies were called in and replaced with the euro.
8. call off : to cancel หมายความว่าต้องการยกเลิก หรือไม่เอา
The company called off a proposed merger.
9. call out : to summon for service [usually used with troops such as the National Guard] จะใช้ในกรณีที่ต้องการเรียกให้มารับใช้บริการสังคม
The governor called out the National Guard to control the rioting.
