The University of Kalmar has 10 000 students and 800 employees. The university has nine departments for education and research in natural sciences, technology, maritime studies, teacher training, social sciences, economics, business administration, tourism, media studies, journalism, languages, humanities and health and behavioral science.
PhD Student in theoretical condensed matter physics Nanomagnetism and Spintronics A Ph.D. Studentship in theoretical condensed matter physics is available in the division of physics at the Department of Natural Sciences of Kalmar University in Sweden. At the Department of Natural Sciences, which belongs to the faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology, doctoral studies are carried out in 11 research areas, including physics. The research project is intended to lead to a Ph.D. in physics, and is directed toward theoretical studies of magnetism and spin-polarized transport in nanostructures. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Division of Solid State Physics at Lund Institute of Technology. The appointment is for 5 years and includes 20% as a teaching assistant in physics. During the first half of the graduate studies (two years full-time) you will be compensated by a doctoral grant. Thereafter you will be employed as a doctoral student (Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 9). We are looking for a person with a very good background in physics, with emphasis in condensed matter physics, and a strong interest in nanophysics. Good computational and programming skills are advantageous. An important condition for successful studies is the ability to work independently. The candidate should have a solid command of the English language. Qualifications: Masters in physics or equivalent. Other qualification requirements are stated in "The Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1998:80), Chapter 9". Further information can be found at http://intranet.fysik.lu.se/intranet.fu/index.asp or are obtainable from the office of the faculty, tel. 046-22 23 301. For further information, please contact Professor Carlo Canali, phone +46480446995 (carlo.canali@hik.se) or Professor Lars Samuelson, tel +46462227679 (lars.samuelson@ftf.lth.se) at Lund Institute of Technology. Representatives of the labour unions can be reached via phone number +46 480446000. The application should be addressed to Registrator, University of Kalmar, S-391 82 Kalmar, Sweden, before 9 November, 2007. Mark your application with reference number 2.2-442/07. The application should contain a short letter motivating the interest in the position, a Curriculum Vitae with official academic transcripts, names and addresses of two referees and a summary of the master thesis and publications, if any.
