การทำ cardiac massage นั้นทำในกรณีที่หัวใจไม่เต้น ใช้การกดหน้าอกเป็นจังหวะๆ ประมาณ ๗๐ ครั้งต่อนาทีเพื่อให้มีเลือดไปเล้ียงสมองระหว่างที่กำลังช่วยหายใจ กับแก้ให้หัวใจเต้นเอง การกดหน้าอกแรงๆแบบนี้ ในคนอายุน้อย ซี่โครงไม่เปราะมักไม่เป็นอะไร (เด็กยิ่งง่ายใหญ่) แต่ในคนอายุมากโอกาสซี่โครงหักจะมากเพราะเปราะ บางทีได้ยินตอนหัก แต่ช่วยไม่ได้ ต้องการกดให้แรงพอที่จะบีบเลือดออกไปสมอง ไปเส้นเลือดเลี้ยงหัวใจ (อย่างอื่นไม่สำคัญเท่าสองอย่างนี้)
