What is a good way to learn English?
Repeat words and remember meanings? Surely, this has not got us far. (ไม่มีผลเท่าไร) Let us talk English. You talk to me in English. I talk to you in English (and Thai, if I feel that I am not with you. ถ้าฉันคิดว่า ตามไม่ทัน หรือไม่เข้าใจ) Together, we learn English. OK? We have been troubled by water. We only need sufficient water! Anyway, let us talk about English and an issue of Thai Government Websites - เครื่องหมาย หรือ แหล่งข้อมูล? http://www.vcharkarn.com/include/vcafe/showkratoo.php?Cid=20&Pid=39775 [There is much to do to project Thai images on the world map. The example below could be enhanced. My suggestions are enclosed in '[...]'. Let us chant the mantra we care for our home 3 times and go to http://202.57.163.51/tatfestival/en/home/ . (It would be nice to have an easy to remember domain name - if it is a part of http://www.tat.or.th/ why not replace the number with the name?) Next well look at the calendar of events for 2006 and lets talk about the English. ] From 31 Jan 2006 To 1 Nov 2006 [?] The Chalerm Phrakiat Ratachapruek 2006 Plant Festival [Known also as the Royal Flora Ratachapruek 2006, the World Horticultural Exhibition, etc. - Surely the organizer should have given this one name in each common language. Allowing several names causes confusion and reduces intensity of the promotion efforts. BTW Should we use raj (royal) instead of ratacha?] In less than a year long, [In less than a year time] Thai people will be the hosts [Thai people will play host] to welcome tourists [guests or visitors] from all over the world in the [a] world class festival called the Chalerm Phrakiat Ratachapruek 2006 Plant Festival. [Royal Flora, Cant we Thais have one name for one thing?] [Now, you see there are many parties and public relations involved in making the festival a success. Success means good return of investment (of public money) and goodwill to Thailand. We can be simple and innocent about promotional strategies and languages, but we should be clear on 'what, where, when and for whom' - whether we talk Thai or English or any language. Yes?] [I'll continue with the events calendar (in #233) and suggested improvement. But after you say 'we care for our home' 3 times and at least 3 times - to anyone!]From 31 Jan 2006 To 29 Dec 2006 [?] : A fair of New Year festival, Pattaya [Perhaps, 'The New Year Festival, Pattaya' would be much easier to remember and promote.] Design and decorate the whole city of Pattaya which is beautiful, musical shows and lighting crackers in celebration of farewell to the old year and welcome the New Year. [Each year, the whole city of Pattaya puts on beautiful decors with music and fireworks to welcome the New Year.] From 7 Feb 2006 To 31 Dec 2006 Central Region Sunday Tour with Family [Central Region Sunday Family Tour] Happy family, no appointment on Sunday, bring family to tour around Central Region near Bangkok, five eastern group, namely, Suwannabhumi, Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Srakaew, Chachoengsao, Samut Prakan. [challenging game!! What is it? A boat race? A bike or car race?] From 4 Apr 2006 To 31 Dec 2006 From the deep royalty [loyalty?] to the words written by [from] the hearts of all Thais Once in the life that all Thai citizens shall have the great valuable [rare] occasion to express their royalties [loyalty - undivided!] to the beloved [much loved] King in written [writing] to express good feeling to our King. [Only once in a life time that all Thais shall have this rare occasion to express their loyalty to the much loved King.] This diary is contained with the sincere words from the heart of all Thais in the occasion of 60th anniversary on throne of our beloved King. [The diary contains sincere words from the hearts of all Thais on the 60th accession anniversary.] All words in this book shall be the historic celebration that all Thais shall never forget. [All words in this diary are historical accounts of this memorable celebration.] We belief that in the deep of your heart shall be fully imbued with great rejoice with all words that youve written in this diary forever. [We believe that deep in your heart you will forever rejoice the words you will have written (in this diary).] [This is a plain advertisement with very confusing references to the King!] [More events to come. I believe TAT should look into them. TAT is charged with promoting Tourism in Thailand and that includes 'all promotional materials'. TAT spends lot of money giving free holidays in Thailand to overseas TV shows. TAT ignores the backyards - that tourists will see and remember. It is time ... ]SR (IP:144.138.31.187,,) [To show that we need to be serious about using English to project Thai images on websites and go to the world audience. I beg you to comment and suggest better 'images'. SR (IP:144.138.31.187,,) I put a posting in 'English by newspapers [เทคนิควิธีการสอน] thawankesmala' http://www.vcharkarn.com/include/vcafe/showkratoo.php?Pid=59404 (#64) on the topic I found in 'สยามรัฐผลัดใบ / ดร. ReviewID=159292 I am puzzled why a French medium - of a country well respected for 'diplomacy skills' would publish such article. I tried looking for the French source article and its author but failed to find either. (Can you help?) In my mind, I do not believe that Thais are like that nor French people are such vulgar. I strongly object to such broad brushing public derogation and I demand public apologies. No people, Thais or non-Thais deserve such public branding. No business can be conducted, no friendship can be made in presence of any of such words. If for some reasons, certain individuals in any society are projecting these attributes, we now ask that they 'stop' dirtying their home and 'help' cleaning 'our' home. NB. For your information: ขี้เกียจ : lazy, idle ขี้โกง : cheating, dishonest ขี้โอ้อวด : showy (showing off), boastful, bragging, ostentatious, vain ขี้อิจฉา : envious, green-eyed, jealous Happy and Healthy 2550 to all ,I regret to report that after a full day of searching the Net for the source article of the issue referred in above post, I failed to collect more info. I decided to put the issue on the shelf. But, it won't be forgotten. Every time I pass a 'C4' store I will remember! This is called 'moving on'. We have a problem. We do our best to solve it within a period of time using what resources we can afford to use. We measure the value of the result we have obtained then we decide the next action. This is a simple pattern for solving problems. It works very well in most cases .I can't tell you how to value your results. For we live in different 'worlds' and we have different aims in life. For example: you could see the share market slump wiped lots of $ off the 'ante' (the money pool in the middle of a poker game). I could see - now only local players and local $ would be on the game table - a true picture of our share market. You know how the game had been played by 'overseas' share traders - big gamblers from elsewhere. They made the 'game' looked 'big'. But they contributed 'little' to the 'local' economy. The 'local' players could easier be used to 'dress up' their game moves. Does it make sense to TAX capital gain from share trading (and to stop its use against the local economy)? SR (IP:144.134.69.6) A recent debate on the differences between arts and sciences prompted me to post this. Arts have bases on perceptual (some say emotional) objects and their linking. For examples: language has words as objects and grammar as linking; music has sound notes and chords; painting has shapes/colours (as graphic objects) and arrangements (as graphic inking). Sciences have bases on physical (some say real) objects and observed linking. So, physics has matters in space and relations among them; chemistry has molecules and their reactions; biology has plants and animals, and their dependencies. What underlies the study of both arts and sciences is much the same if we draw up a simple model of the discipline and throw away the labels. The findings (theories) in one discipline may categorically (as in analogously) apply in another, at least, to a certain level. (This level is determined by human by repeating observations. Nature knows the limits by interacting and adapting under parsimony least expense law?) Let me try to show this simple thinking with a 'graph. A graph is a mathematic object; made up of modes (bubbles) and arcs (connecting lines). The graph says this relates to that if node this has an arc to node that. Now if we see that X--A, Y--B, C--Z--D , we could make rules of linking so that node X only relates node A, ., but node Z relates to nodes C and D. We have a grammar! Let us put labels on nodes and arcs in our graph. Would you do that, please? Oops! I mislabelled nodes in my graph. I have concept names rather than objects and relation names in -- --. Here are some parts of my graph I love You [ (I)--love--(You) ]; Sun rises in the East; E = mc^2; 2H + O --> H2O; In my simplistic way, I can say that the pattern for learning arts and sciences is: What are the objects of interest? Do they relate and how? Why they are this or that way? What if ? Just imagine how much more fun we can have if objects move and relations change! I can hardly wait to find out .
P.S. I did not win the debate. My purpose for the debate was to 'learn' from a 'friend'. I learned and I still have that friend to help ***care*** for our home. no idae Hello everybody. My nickname is Tak. I am interested in English language and I like it. I do work in company(the administrative side). Usually, I writed e-mail to foreign countries but it's not well. I want to writing, reading and speaking very well. could you help me ? Thanks for your prompt reply. Thank you, Tak Dear Tak, You are well on your way to mastering English. You are interested in English. You like English. You use English on your work. I would suggest: 1) you think about 'things' (nouns, pronouns, sexes and cases) and they relate-- are they subjects (actors)? or objects (receivers or victims) or just watchers 2) you spend some time on how to control "time" in English. -- how do you say WHEN something ('actions') happen/will happen/have happened/... It is slightly difficult at first to think of all these things when you use English. But by using English often, using examples and making senses of English, you will master English. Please, look at your posting and rewrite it to make it beautiful and smooth. SR (IP:144.134.69.241) what is politic? how to get politic? what is interest group? what is political party? what is algorithm(power)? ----------------------------------thanks------------------------------ a_meenyic@hotmail.com (IP:222.123.103.154) Hello people ;P. thankz alot for making up this topic cause I can read thai but I can't type it...and my english is quite good cause I learn in international school but hey, can I ask you guys something? I want to be a doctor = =^^^ (i'm know that is too far) but still I want to, so do any of you guys know any university in Thailand that have International Medical Program cause as far as I try seaching, there is none so far... so I am asking you guys for help not to show off my english or something... anna_aquar@hotmail.com (IP:125.24.7.86) Hi guys [Please remember to "care for our home" ]a_meenyic@hotmail.com Your questions may be best answered with a thesaurus dictionary or searching the Net. But, I am curious about "algorithm(power)". Where did you find it used? The combination of 'structured method' and 'capacity (to achieve)' almost makes common sense (but not grammatic English .anna_aquar@hotmail.com You have brought up an important issue in the future (of 'global village'). Englis is most likely the common global language for 'most every day things'. This means doctors, pilots, ship captains, engineers, scientists of all sorts, signs and warnings should all speak English 'effectively' (at a level of competency for communication in their fields). To achieve this level, we will need strong willingness to learn, teachers and cultural supports. For those who needs encouragement: there are shortages of vaious skills in information, health care, education and construction technologies in countries around the world. Thai professionals are restricted from working internationally not because of their lack of skills but their incompetency in English! Just imagine the whole world could be yours for the price of learning English .SR (IP:144.138.31.117) Hi all members. I am a new member here. so glad to be here. ![]() Now I'm studying French and I want to talk to him. If you're that man please tell me! Merci beaucoup. On February 13, 2008, the Australia prime minister Kevin Rudd put a motion to the Australian Parliament as an apology to Indigenous people. Today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history. We reflect on their past mistreatment. We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations - this blemished chapter in our national history. The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page. A new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future. We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians. We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country. For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry. To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry. And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry. We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation. For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written. We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians. A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again. A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity. A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed. A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility. A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia." I think the apology to the Stolen Generation is written very well - in plain and easy to understand (Autralian) English. The story of the Stolen Generation is one that is hidden from international knowledge for 100 years. It is a story about disregard for human rights because of racial differences. Because we are not beyond prejudices and biases, the apolgy is a lesson to us all. We can learn to recognize and accept our wrong doings and learn to find solutions that are acceptable to all. Yes, this is difficult. But, we should strive for equality and harmony in common to all - not just for ourselves. ความเห็นเพิ่มเติมที่ 252 28 พ.ย. 2551 (12:00) Rule # 1 in marketing: "out of sight - out of mind" is proven true. In this case, to keep a blog alive even to be useful, one must keep expending energy and time. For those who may have forgotten what this blog is about: we try to use English as a tool for communication in this century and for personal development (errh -self learning--). We use English in its plain and simple forms. We don't try to show off (how good or bad) our English. We just 'talk' (or 'walk the talk' It is amazingly simple to find out how many English words we do know. If we start listing words by simple patterns. Let's see how many simple words with 'at' we know - going from a--z: at, bat, cat, (data), (eat), fat, (GATT), hat, (lat = latitude), mat, (oat), pat, sat, tat, vat, (wat), ... How about that eh? We can roll out "แอ็ต" words (and even 'eat' อี็ต and 'oat' โอ็ต without any problem. Try roll out "an" words, "in" words and so on, Make it a game for our younger brothers / sisters (and 'papa' = grand-father / 'nana' = grand-mother Do drop a line of talk in here so that I can share your thoughts.
