Yeah? You sounded alright -- I bet you snap back at them (farangs) now - without even thinking about Thai words.

Language is not just words and grammar rules - but FEELINGS and EMOTIONS and GESTURES (use whole hands please not just one middle finger) and so on.

Your face, your eyes, your voice and all your body signs come together in one expression. Powerful is the REAL language - I cannot really WRITE about this in words alone.

I would be glad to have you on MY SIDE (as a friend) anytime - but I would be a tat (a bit) scared to make you crossed (make you angry). I think I see the fire in your eyes.

Happy New Year to ALL.

I wish I could be more cheerful and celebrate Songkarn in traditional way. I do miss my family and friends.

But the way Thailand is chasing Sciences and Technologies - by spending money (out of the country) for a lot EXHIBITION centres and TOYS - somehow fills me with an uneasy feeling. Are we playing other countries\' games? You know by using their toys we are just following them.

What we really want is to think of the FUTURE in 20-30 years time. Paint the pictures of what we would be. Make sure we have good agreement on the pictures. Then we would go ALL OUT (try our best with whatever we have) to make our dream come true.

We are different people (wearing suits and ties - just not the way most of us are), we have different dreams - we have our way of life. Why? Why should we FOLLOW their foot steps? Somehow, it just does not fit (is not right) to do this when we have other options and other ways of achieving our dreams.

I put a little fun article in Sudipan - it\'s called ฝัน ของไทย - นอนกันเถิด. The point I really want to say is that there are a lot of less POPULAR areas of technologies that we can go into. There are matters that as a society we all expect to see - SAFETY, NATURE SPACE, GAMES and INTELLECTUAL ENDEAVOURS, HEALTH, CULTURE and SMILES. All these things sell well to foreigners and they come en mass (lots and lots) - some even buy our land and life style. Yet, all these things are TOO EXPENSIVE for Thais. So are fruits and vegetables and many other things - they have become EXPORT items and leave our land. ALL of them are leaving our land.

Now - let us dream of the future. Let us put forth the vision (for the GOVERNMENT and lot of people cannot do do that) for the people to choose. Let us show the world we can go foreward by ourselves, We are smart enough to figure out our way. We do not have have to follow the path they themselves have ABANDONED.

Let us first make peace among ourselves and share our world - our dreams.

Yeah, I used to have that problem too.

People suggested that I should join - the Toast Master Club - (they are out there in some English speaking countries - they help people to speak in public). But I did not go because I lived (still live) far (60 km) from town.

I trained myself by writing a short speech. Then I practiced my speech in front of a mirror - alone. I looked how my face look, how my hands and body move ... I saw how my hair stood up!

I asked friends to listen to my speech (they had a few giggles). But I managed to keep calm and looked at them rather than my hands and feet. (Do you do that too?)

On my first talk - I had to take many deep breaths and try to keep calm. A friend came over and gave me a big hug. And that was it. I knew then I was going to talk to friends. I went out and stood in front of 200 people. I looked for familiar faces - I decided that I was going to talk to them - my friends. I started \'Hello, ... this is my first public talk.\' ...

For 45 minutes I talked. I walked left, right, all over the place. I kept looking for friends for a while. Before I saw other smiling faces - I had more friends in there!

That was how I started. I can go out there and say things now. But mind you - I still have butterflies in my tummy.

Dear pon.siri,

I am glad you called in. You have taken a BIG step forward. You have come out and looked what you can do to use English better. I congratulate you for your courage.

I think you are very good with -book- English. You need more -talk- English. I could not really help you - in here there is only -writing-.

Take another step please to talk with farangs more often and longer -every chance you have!

If you could try something like:
Please say again - I missed what you said.
I am sorry I did not understand what you mean.
Forgive me - I could not catch you.

Or you could try to be BOLD and say something like:
So you mean ...such and such... Is that correct?
That sounds funny - Say it again please.

I think learning some ICE BREAKERS (to start a conversation) would also help. Like:

I know YOU! You are ...a famous movie star... - this often brings a smile and good long talk.

Can you tell me please how to get to ...a famous place...? - this makes them puzzled but you will get a conversation.

Would you mind if I try my English on you? - a straight and honest way works well every time

This is the first time for me to post my comments in website. I\'m very impressed by your words. You seem to be an academic staff or a teacher, right? I normally just read what people think and say. After reading this, i think that this\'s very useful and inspire me to learn and practise more about English; writing, reading, listening, speaking, as well. I just want to have better english skills. Why? In the past, i just want to be good at english because i just want to be able to communicate with foreign people and get good job in big farang\'s company. But after reading your comments of to be aware of being as slaves of westerner\'s technologies,i realize more than as usual in this changing world.

Thanks for giving me the chance to say and wake me up from the world i see before naka.

Second, I have my secret...shhhhhh... if you can keep a secret or two I will tell you what I am - or rather what I do for living. <<<...>>> shhhhhh. Please, REMEMBER you promised. ==_v_==

You promised to use more English - did I hear that right?
Use it as a tool - but a valuable tool please.

People are (farangs or not) much the same inside. There are good people and there are bad people. More often than not many farangs have changed and become very good friends. Please keep a smiling face when you talk to them - only after you are sure that they are BAD then you SMIRK (smile with a blame) at them. :-q

On your PS - I will not pick on your mistakes, if you do not pick on mine. Is that OK?

Dear Mikan,

You are absolutely welcome. I am here to chat and to learn. Just like you, I learn what I can when I can.

Mind you - I talk funny. I do not like to talk about mistakes - (we all make mistakes, and the mistakes we make are our responsibility to learn and to correct).

I may talk about misunderstanding sometimes - again this is not my favourite topic.

But I like sharing experiences, viewpoints and humours in English. (It is a pity, we cannot share a drink or a meal too. But who knows what the future holds for us.)

It is my intention to encourage a view of English - not as a sacred (holy) LANGUAGE, but as a good TOOL to be used to understand what some farangs are talking about and how to talk back at them farangs.

I also like to see we export some software products to the world - to do that we need to package them in English.

As for agricultural exports my view is we are sending away LIFE MATERIALS (the matters we need to keep us alive) in exchange of HAZARDOUS MATERIALS (the matters they say we need but in fact the matters are KILLING us).

So you see - though I will talk about many things. I will often talk about -- how we live in society with nature. You are now warned!

This theme is very interesting so much. I\'m one who have lots of problem to speak and listen. Now i\'m working in the global company where I always have to use english language.
Before I started in this company,I had studied english language in many institute. I guess that it\'s enough for me to work. Anyway, that\'s still not enough yet. I also have plan to learn in Master Degree in my interested field in nearly future.
Therefore, I applied to the TOEFL Caurse for this matter. Yes, That\'s right. Now, I\'m studying in TOEFL Program. I really hope to be pleased with the satisfied scores.

Working and Learning together are not easy to me.
Anyway,I do by best for this deal.

I hope you would continue to help us along.

I have no experience with TOEFL program. I do not know what you do in that course. In fact, I do not know what lots of English courses are about. I do know that reading and writing can help.

But talking is where you have to shoot from your hip (to do quickly - no time to prepare). It is talking - learning to say things AUTOMATICALLY - that we are about.

I prefer and use simple words. I like short simple sentences. I try to think about the grammar stuff at the same time. You know, we have to think about the male/female, the one/many, the tense (past/now/future) ... as we talk.

If you can swim or ride a bicycle - you can see what I mean - you do not tell yourself what to do - bit by bit. You just do it.

Hi all.

I\'m also not the native speaker or the grammarian.So, I can not tell you whether it is coorect grammar or not.

Anyway, Thank you for any comments you reply. I really agree and feel happiness to join in the same interesing group.

There are many English Programs for person who interested in. For the example,whenever you want to study abroad, whenever you hope to get the scolarship from some government institutes.
TOEFL is the famous program which acceptable and agreement for many ccountry such as America, Western Countries.
And more than this I had heard are IELTS,TOEIC, GMAT, etc.

So, if you are interesting in,you have to prepare beforehand.

I hope this will be the advantage information for you.

I seriously mean -- STOP KILLING MOTHER FISH --.

I tried to ask the Department of Fisheries - why they allow fish stocks to be DECIMATED (wiped out or become extinct - words cannot carry the feeling of loss anymore).

Our forests were cleared, turned into supermarkets and carparks - and we stood by and watched. Our water was poinsoned, rivers turned into sewerage drains - and yet we stood by and watched. We are really a bunch of bystanders and spectatotors!

It is NOT our business - we say. It is TOO BIG for us to do - we say. It is our WORLD - we agree. It is WHERE we live - we know. People went to wars for less worthy causes. The fish stocks are OURS, we must now protect them for the future - for our kids.

Now can we stand up and say to our friends and neighbours, seriously today to
-- STOP KILLING MOTHER FISH --?

(It matters little, who I am, but what I am for. I come but from dirt of this earth and dirt I will return - a saying which I cannot recall in full - I believe this is an Aborigines dream.)

That\'s what I think.As I have seen from another countries in EU,such as Germany,Switzerland,Austria.
The water their(rivers and lakes) are very very clean,not like rivers in Thai,we don\'t even wanna touch the water from those. *sigh*

You are very good at English. Would you show us how we can be as good as you? Would you talk?

I did not set out (intend) to include my view and belief - all I had in mind was to see if we could all look at English as a TOOL to be used for whatsoever we like. English is not our master. Neither is Technology nor Democracy nor ...

We long for (wish for) a utopia (a happy place) among the stars in unknown space. I think we will not be welcome in the galactic society - why just one look at our earth and the mess we are making and leaving around. I think we will not qualify (pass the test) on smart beings. We see are killing most things that have served us well for countless generations. We are killing BIRDS and BEES and many lifeforms that have been laying GOLDEN eggs for us for FREE. We are looking up to GLOBAL CORPORATIONS for fixes (correction) for our problems (yes they do love our stupidity and they do hate our problems - I dare you to name 100 corporations - though I doubt that you would settle down (stop) at 100 - Many of us can write down 500 fortune companies and many of us can draw a line to the rubbish and mess they are spreading out in our world. I known some of these are known to have - hi-tech - facilities, which means - cleaner inside a building -.
Do they keep they garbage inside their facilities?

Do you know there are many man-made hills appearing here and there in Europe and America? These hills go some 30-50 m underground with plastic lining and they go up to 30 m aboveground. These hills cover 25-200 Rai, with (bright green and yellow) plastic pipes coming off the hills. Inside these hills they keep garbage. The pipes are for gases like methane and formaldehyde - known as good soil sterilant (they kill soil!) to escape or to go into homes as cooking gas (they also kill people).

In only 5 years or less (as soon as our infrastructural industries get to work at 50% capacity or more) we will have these hills to stand by and watch.

Well if we are lucky enough we might escape to the coastal areas (near the seas) - but we will not the land of plenty any more if we do not --STOP KILLING MOTHER FISH --.
