Let's talk English.

What is a good way to learn English?
Repeat words and remember meanings?
Surely, this has not got us far. (ไม่มีผลเท่าไร)

Let us talk English. You talk to me in English. I talk to you in English (and Thai, if I feel that I am not with you. ถ้าฉันคิดว่า ตามไม่ทัน หรือไม่เข้าใจ) Together, we learn English. OK?

It is funny Khun Kai; == a world full of surprises ==

I had a chance to watch a graduation (testimur or degree conferring) ceremony yesterday.
Some 200 people received a degree - a testimur saying that they had done the yukka (hard work).
And now they are declared "scholars" (those who had learned).
It was a joyous (happy) time for many. It was a milestone (a mark on the road) on their journey through life.
== It was not the end of learning, because learning is lifelong. == (I am sure you agree.)

The degrees say they are competent (able) to do certain "technical" things.
The degrees do not say they will be successful. That is another learning.

What we mean by "successful"? It is upto individuals. They may ask themslves "What can I dream now? (in the world I live in)", "What future can I make? (for other people to live in)" or "How do I change the world? (for my children and other beings)".
The questions depend on our views of life - our humanity! The answers depend on the environment, our willingness to "use" things (and people and lives) around us.

Only you can answer the question of "how to be a human". Your answer will be judged by your society.
Of course, we can always do something about ourselves.

Ummmh let me see, I must say "stop killing mother fish" and whales for they are still dying. And I should tell ...

Winston Churchill was once confronted with "... you are drunk!", to which he replied, "Madam, that I am as much as you are ugly. The difference is when I wake up tomorrow I will be sober" (not drunk anymore).

Hi one and all, == be happy, we are alive== (Let us stop killing nature.)

Once again, we see that a quick and clean solution to our energy problems, is a "cultural" solution (one that changes our behaviour - or the way we do things). Technical solutions (ones that changes environment - or the way we want our environment to serve us) are often much more difficult and costly.

We had been welknown for our cultures and our plentiful environment. We had been envious!
We had been known as a mythical (exotic) land of happy smiles. We had been dreams!

Recently, we had tried so hard to be "technical" and "economical". We had changed our land.
We had changed our cultures. We had become "slaves" of technologies. (Go wash your cars!)

Now, we look around, we find nice pictures of beach and mountain resorts - none are really ours.
We are working harder and longer. We spend less time with family, with friends and sleeping.
We are no longer smiling freely. Who can afford to smile? When we are surrounded by hazardous materials, noises, dangers from mechanical failures, threats from other people...

In search of "bigger" amounts of money rather than "real values", we forgot our lives, our world - the meanings of ourselves.

Now, we cannot trust "labels" on goods, "words" on contracts, (even) "smiles" on faces ...
Now, our world is already darkened. (We do not need to turn off a light or two).

Now is the time to "shine", to light up the world around us, to brighten our hopes, and to sparkle our mind.

== We are here today to grow our world and culture and to glow! ==

Hi, == just try to be helpful== (stop killing nature)

I am not familiar with needle works or stitching arts. These are smart and wonderful technologies.

I am unclear which of these applies to งานปัก: embellishment, emboidery, tapestry or stitchery.
They are different in materials and styles.
I do not know what is meant by โยงด้าย: cross threads or cross stitches or just loose threads/stitches.

Let me make a guess and say something like:

"This embroidery is evenly smooth, without any cross stitches or creases."

If you would like that in points, I would say:
"This piece of embroidery is
1. without any cross stitches or threading,
2. evenly smooth without creases or wrinkles.

I think I like the top one better. (Your tastes may vary.) The word "embroidery" may be replaced by "tapestry", woven cloth, ... as best fit to the art work here.

You know, needle works are always highly valued, make good gifts, easy and light to carry, ...

They are strong candidates for cultural and exportable products. "5-smile products".

They are very clean and friendly to our environment. They are "arts" and "minds".

Hi == no western suit and neck tie == (stop killing mother nature).

Why many Thai men adopt western suits and neck ties is a real mystery.
Western suits are hardly comfortable in hot, humid and wet weathers.
And neck ties? What are these little dangling tails good for?

I can understand these things are made for sale to cold climate westerners.
But most expensive suits and ties are bought from overseas as an object of status - to say how much ....

For each TON of agriculture export, we lose about 100 Kg of top soil (the real good earth we are so lucky to have), about 900 L of water goes with the shipment, after some 35,000-50,000 L has been used to raise it.
There are also sweats and tears and other human efforts that are gone with that living supporting ("good") stuff.

How much have we exported? How much is left? And for how long?
What have we got in exchange? Suits, cars, perfumes, movies, alcoholic drinks, ... with a few exceptions, the stuff we get for our "good" soil is "stuff-all" (nothing).

The precious soil we have is being exported or exchanged for only pittance (little things) and even life-dangering stuff.
The stuff that heat up our land, break up our lives and our way of life.
If "HELL" is hot, we must be well on our way there!
Our paradise is lost (exported). And worse is we are killing our land and natural infrastructures over our land.
We are "burning the bridginges behind us" (destroying the return road). And we are doing that for "import" of ...

The "smart" stuff, the Emperor"s New Cloth! == Only fools cannot see. ==

Have a good day now - SMILE - it is the FIRST thing for us to do before the hard work ahead.

OOPS and sorry == haste makes waste (is true again) == [stop killing mother nature]

"burning the bridginges behind us" is a "typo" (typing mistake). It should be "burning the bridges behind us".

A common way in our lives, we make "decisions" and we "do" things then we "check" ...
if the results are "good" then we will do the "same", otherwise we will "change".

We repeat this cycle of deciding, doing, checking and changing over and over. We may call this "learning".
We may also remember the "conditions" that we make our decisions and the conditions that we do our actions and the "wrong" results - so we learn to avoid them.
This is all very well in theory (some rules in general) or by some theorems (some specific rules for specific conditions).
But each time we do things, we "privately" (separately) do things alone. We do in the "now" conditions (that are not certain), which may differ from the "past" conditions (certainties that happened).
So, even when we can do things exactly as we have done in the past, we cannot quarantee the same results, if we cannot hold the conditions as before.

Can we hold on to "the" (certain) PAST?
Can we say where we are NOW?
Can we use theories to predict "a" (desired/imaginary) FUTURE?

How can we ever "learn" anything?

Those who can answer these questions, will forever be happy.

Hi all == Warning: wet floor ahead == and [stop killing mother nature]

Let us continue our journey in the same direction as the last posting.

We normally make our decisions based on results of our actions in the past.
And our results somehow depend on the decisions we have made before.

We have an an interesting situation where "causes" and "effects" entwined (entangled or interleaved).
We change when we get "pain" results; and we do the same when we get "pleasure" results.
We observe (see) that we make some "good" decisions and some "bad" decisions in our lives.
We accumulate (add up) pain and pleasure results and say how successful (miserable or happy) we are.

What really matters (is important) is not making right decisions and getting good results ALL THE TIME.
We only need to make ENOUGH right decisions and to get ENOUGH pleasure results to be HAPPY .

Well, we may say, we like to have a PROVEN formula - so we are guaranteed happy lives.

Not a problem! There are many formulae...

Oh, this is where we will have a break (a stop)! We will have some refreshments (tea or coffee or cold drinks).
Do not stray (go wandering) out too far. The bus will continue (its journey) at ....

While we wait ... let us do an exercise (to keep us in good shape).

== How smart is your right foot? ==

This is so funny that it will "boggle" your mind.

And you will keep trying at least 50 more times to see if you can "outsmart" your foot!

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing that, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

Your right foot will change direction... And there is nothing you can do about it! ==No?==

Can anyone beat (do) it? Can anyone explain this?

You can try that again with your left foot and left hand.
And for those ambidextrous (equally left and right handed), try with both feet and hands at the same time.

Our journey will resume (restart/continue) after this exercise. So do not wander off...

I promised to give an answer to how to be successful (see #101).
I "could" simply say == be good and work smart ==.
Then you "would" obviously not "take me seriously" (believe in me) anymore.

So, a long answer is necessary. And we will take the opportunity for another detour.

Before, we do that. Let me introduce a way to say (pronounce) words aloud.
I have been giving similar-in-meaning words (synonyms) in round brackets "(...)".
I will be using square brackets "[...]" to say [s ay - like in “day” or “may”] some words.
This may interrupt (break) the flow of our talk, but we may be able to make words more understandable. I will however keep pronunciation [pro nun zi Ashun] to minimal and beg (ask) that we consult (look up) a good dictionary or get help from elsewhere.

Now, let me say that the detour road is winding [wine ding] (meandering [me an dering] or snaking), rough [r uf] and bumpy, and full of troughs [tr ofs] and crests [kr ests] (valleys and hills).
But, the tour will be interesting and entertaining.

The place we are visiting is in a sense at the frontier of exploration. There are few detailed maps and signposts. There are few pioneers (explorers - we may call them researchers) and settlers (or teachers who live there). I, myself, was fortunate (lucky) to join a search for the deepest "well" in a swamp. There are many strange objects (things) that we do not yet have words for.

I see. You are all excited and eager to go there. Are you really ready? Have you checked your papers and baggage?
By the way, the tour may take a whole week if good weathers hold. Some good campfire stories and games would help.

Oh, better let your next-of-kin (close relatives such as parents, wife or husband, brothers or sisters) or friends and neighbours know where you are going. Don’t forget to ask someone to feed your pets, water your plants and collect your mail.

Have you learned to sing "As we go a-wandering, along the mountain tracks ..."?
Never mind. Please get ready and assemble here for a roll call (name check) and the coach at ...
See you {stop killing mother nature} then.

All aboard == (and you "stop killing mother nature) ==

we will commence (begin) the detour to explain our answer == be good and work smart ==.

Let us "make a simple model" (picture) of what we are talking about.
Let us use a grid (a graph paper) to represent our environment (our space) to be explored.
Let us do things in steps (day by day, week by week and so on).

And let us start at "a point" in the environment (put a point on the graph paper and call it the "origin" (0,0) point).
Let us say that we are not happy being at this point and we have heard a rumour [roomer] that there is a "better" point elsewhere.
(It is also a pity that no one can tell us where "the" perfect place is .)
So, we search (look around) as far as we can see. (Some of us may see less and some see more).
Then, we make a "decision" to go in a direction (in this model we may go "up", "down", "left" and "right").

How do we make a decision? That depends on what we "perceive" (see) to be relevant [rail a vaant](useful) to our quest (goal or mission).
We may "guess" or flip 2 coins (or 1 coin twice) to get a direction (1 among 4 possibilities). We call this method a "random" choice.
We may consider facts (what happened in the past) and theories ("scientific" predictions) and choose the "best fit" direction.
We call this method a "logical" ("scientific" or so-called (often nicknamed) "greedy") choice.

I think we had a good start so far. But I will take a 5 (minutes break) for any questions.
Make it work, eh! Smileys.

No wonder, we don"t get things done. When "a 5" (minute break) get stretched into hours.

=Decisions alone change nothing.= You can wish and dream till "kingdoms come" (doomsday, end of the world).

We must act (make a "move") to get to our new location or position (put another point on the graph paper).

(To save us from going off the graph paper later, we will only move a tad (small distance) on the graph paper at a time.)

Now, we are at another location in our environment, we may find happiness (bliss) here and wish to stay for eternity
or we may find it unsuitable (dukkha) and we have to repeat our process (choose and move) again. ;-p

Chances are very small that we would find a happy point that lasts for a long, long time.
As each and all of us act and change our environment all the time.
Impermanence (changing) is therefore, a character (feature) of Buddhistic systems, Darwinian (evolutionary) systems and Entropy (thermodynamic) systems.

Go on. Pretend that you are “hard to please” (fussy). Choose and move a few more times.

Here we will take a recess [re ses] (a break) to refresh (revitalize) ourselves and to consider the fitness (appropriateness) [ap pro pre ate nes] of the model for the next step. Analyses and analogies [an a lo gee s] (discussions and reflections on examples) may reveal (show) certain limits (boundary conditions) of the model above.

Please remember we are also playing games with English here. And remember to {Stop Killing Mother Nature}.

Are we all here? Let us recite our mantra Stop Killing Mother Nature and continue ...

For each move we make, there is an output (a product, an outcome or a result).
Is this result "good" (for us) or just "a waste" of our time and resources?
(Our lives are "limited". Our environment and resources are limited.)
Is this "goodness" for this one time or longer time? (How long does it last?)
Let us put this question in a "too hard basket" for the moment (for now) and "move on" (continue).

Let us measure [may sher] the result of our action on the environment
by the direct distance between the last point and the first point (the origin or (0, 0)).
And let us say, the more (further) we are away from the origin, the better we are at playing this game.

(This measure is "an artificial one" (a fake).
But no prize will be awarded for a "real" measure, because we are playing with a "conceptual" or "thought" model.)

For some of us who feel "left out" (or "lost" or "not grasping" or "not understanding") may try
a game of "เป่ายิงฉุบ" (rock-paper-scissors)
or make up a triangular pyramid (tetrahedral solid from 4 equal equilateral or equal-sided triangles)
to explore winning strategies [stra te gees].

The “win/lose”, “good/bad”, “yes/no” is a “measure” of the results of our choices and acts.

You may rub out your points and start again. when we are ready ...

Let us resume [re soom] (continue) { Stop Killing Mother Nature}

I see, we all chose a direction and kept moving in that direction.
Did anyone do better than that? Can anyone do better than that?
Did someone cheat by choosing and moving diagonally (to opposite corner)?
Shame on you! We must “play by” (obey) the rules to be “fair” to all players.

Some of us see winning as desirable [de sy ra bel]. Some will stop at nothing but a win.
Some may say winning is NOT everything, but HOW we play the game.

For most of us – we win some and we lose some. (Of course, we would like to win just a few more times.)

How many points should we have made? Did we settle (agree) on umpteen (an arbitrary number) points?
How do know when this game ends?
Well, in the game of life, we all want to see game ends very slowly – the more steps the better!

Let us ponder (think about, contemplate) over this issue (subject of concern) for a while.

I have to go to “the loo” (a toilet) and have "a piss" ("a pee" or "a wee" or urinate).
("a poo", "a shit" = a heavier load) I will let you contribute ...

Surprise! I am back again today...{Stop Killing Mother Nature}

There is a French word "resume" [ray soo may] (a document about life and work) that hasbeen adopted into English.

Oh, I have just heard of a decree [de kre] (a ruling) from the Supreme Council.
The results of your actions will now be measured by the area over the left-right axis and under the path of your moves.
“That is not fair!” you say. Well, life is not always fair. Laws are just not fair. Why? Because we are really not fair!

Alright, we will “clean the slate” (wipe the board) and play this game again. You know the rules of the game now.

Umm, this is funny. No one chose to move “left” or “down”.
You all chose to move “up” first, then either “up” or “right” roughly equal number of times.
You either made a big upturned mirror image L shape or a diagonally zigzag line.

Funny, how the way we measure results changes the way we choose and move!

I don”t know about you but I am thirsty. I will have a drink. Would you like some?

==Warning== Wet and slippery floor ahead! But keep smiling

You could see from my last posting, when a measure of “good” (winning) is known, we would play the game differently.
We even recognize that choosing “left” or “down” would get us nowhere.
If we compare this to our learning to play a game of life,
we may see that we have more choices, more moves and a more complex measure of success,
but the game is just an extension of our game on the graph paper.

Yes it is true that we DO NOT know the measure of success.
Yes it is true that we CAN SET our own measure of success.

Wait a minute! We have more choices … what choices? What moves?
Well now that is up to you again. You can choose any moves that are not forbidden.
For all moves that are not explicitly forbidden, are tacitly (implicitly) allowed.
(You have read the laws and found a loophole? Umm …)

Some moves may be taxed and some moves may be socially …

No, we won”t go about knocking things down. We are not vandals.
There are things that need changing for the better. We will change them.
We will choose and act in the way that will end up changing those things.
If we set our choices and our measure, we can, all, help and change them. We will do what we can when we can.

Did you see THAT? A swallow just swooped down and caught a grasshopper off the tamarind tree.
I hope the grasshopper has not been sprayed with insecticides or herbicides.

We have so many ways to measure our results, what are our performance indicators?
We may recite [re site] (incant, sing) a “different circumstance” principle.
We may beckon (call for) a universal principle with social or religious values. …

All our choices and moves are useless if we do not have a measure of “good” (assuming “not good” is “bad”).
That is if we do not know how we mark the work and what the “pass” mark is.
Do we need to know “who” the marker is and how fair s/he (she or he) is?
Can we choose and appoint a marker (กบเลือกนาย) to evaluate (check) our results? ...

Dear cherry and >_< =welcome= would you put your hand up and say Stop Killing Whales?
I am glad you have decided and acted. By doing so, you are now "active". You have started to take "control" of your life.
On your way, we hope you will take control of English, too.

Now, let us get back on board the bus. I am a little "under the weather" (unwell) but we should continue ...

Things in nature have definite (certain) shape, size and behaviour...
Water seeks lower grounds. Plants seek sunlight. Pigs do not fly....
We have been observing and making notes of these facts for a very long time.
We have learned that Mother Nature works by her definite rules.
We do not know how many rules there are. We have understood some rules.
We are trying really hard to learn more.
Some of us observe phenomena (happenings) and make notes and look for rules to make sense of “the reality.”
Some of us “postulate” (guess) a rule (theory) then go and look for (or make experiments to gather) “evidence” to prove the rule.

So there are natural “constraints” (limits) and “objectives” (purposes)
that control the way we “decide”, “act” and “measure” our “success”.
The exercise in posting 112 shows us that our body parts (organs) do not always work “independently”.
Things in nature seldom work alone.
We are not alone. What we do may affect (impact, change) results of other people”s acts.
What we do may depend on what other do.

So, we are not really “free” to do what we like!

If we look at what “we” (many of us) act and what results we get for ourselves and for others.
Do we lose and they also lose [loos]? (a lose-lose situation)
Do we “win” and they “lose” or the other way round? (a “win-lose” situation).
Do we win and they also win? (a win-win situation)
Can we "do well" and get "good results" all round (all results for every one)?

So, we are not really “smart” to "do" what we like!

I think I "had enough" (am full or too tired) today. Could you call me for dinner?
