Basic Connectivity
Drivers
Apple has posted version 2.4 of its FireWire drivers (the FireWire Enabler and Support extensions); they require at least Mac OS 9.
The FireWire Support Extension offers the basic system services required to use FireWire hardware and software. The FireWire Enabler adds hardware-specific support for certain FireWire interfaces - as of version 2.1, the Enabler only directly supports the Apple FireWire PCI Card, the built-in FireWire interface on the Blue & White PowerMac G3s, and Newer Technology\'s FireWire 2 Go PC Card.
Hubs, Repeaters, and Cables
A FireWire cable can be at most 15 feet long, and comes with either two 6-pin connectors (such cables have two data wires and two power wires - for devices which derive their power from the FireWire bus), or, for data-only cables, one 6-pin and one 4-pin connector. Repeater stations (a maximum of 16) can be used to connect cables to span longer distances. Hubs prevent you from having to daisy chain FireWire devices, and can also be used to provide power to FireWire peripherals. One can connect up to 63 devices to a FireWire network.

FireWire PCI and PC Host Adapter Cards
FireWire adapter cards are an option for computers without built-in FireWire ports, but a particular PCI or PC FireWire card may not support a particular FireWire product. Be sure to check with the card\'s manufacturer, especially if you are buying a FireWire card to use a specific device. It appears that supporting DV (Digital Video) equipment, the market where FireWire has been most warmly embraced, has been the priority of companies making FireWire host adapters. But, just because a PC/PCI card has a FireWire connector, doesn\'t mean that its intent is to be a full-function FireWire host adapter - for example, the Sony DVBK-CW2000 PC Card\'s only function (noted in the section on digital imaging products) is to capture for still frames from DV.
Some parameters one should consider are the numbers of ports the card offers, types of connectors (6-pin or 4-pin; a card with only a 4-pin connector can\'t provide power to connected devices), the maximum throughput (400, 200, or 100, Mbps), and the peripherals the card supports.

Digital Imaging
Transmitting data from a multimedia device to a computer was a motivating application for FireWire; so not surprisingly, video camcorders supporting Digital Video (henceforth "DV") were the first products to sport IEEE 1394 inputs and outputs. And some of the first FireWire PCI host adapter cards came bundled exclusively as part of complete DV editing packages.
Remember to keep FireWire and DV separate in your mind: FireWire is a hardware standard for connecting peripherals to a computer; DV is a data format for transferring and storing digital video (to tape, disks, or other media). That said, most (but not all) DV camcorders come with FireWire interfaces. At this writing, USB seems to be more popular than FireWire for downloading JPEGs from digital cameras, but high-end digital cameras with FireWire interfaces are available.
Most existing analog video devices use either S-video or RCA connectors for input and output - a problem since no Macs with FireWire on the motherboard have include analog inputs, too. However, there are "transcoder" boxes from other companies that convert between analog video and digital video. DV encoding/decoding via special hardware is often, but not always, part of this process; sometimes the analog video may be digitized in a different format. And some devices (e.g. certain camcorders) can encode DV onto tape from an analog source and play it back over FireWire later, but cannot convert in real time directly from the analog source to FireWire outputs.

Mass Storage
FireWire storage devices communicate with the host computer via the Serial Bus Protocol-2. A letter by LaCie\'s Mike Mihalik offers insight into the current state of FireWire storage products, and an Adaptec white paper compares FireWire, as an I/O interface, to SCSI, USB, and IDE.
According to Apple TIL article 58606, booting from a FireWire volume is only supported on "the Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) with Boot ROM version 3.22f1 or later, and the PowerBook (FireWire)." More specifically, the G4 developer note states: "The Power Mac G4 computer can boot from a FireWire storage device that implements SBP-2 (Serial Bus Protocol) with the RBC (reduced block commands) command set."
A MacInTouch reader notes that any Firewire-equipped G3 and G4 PowerMac can be used in Target Disk Mode.
