FIREWIRE HARD DRIVE
Different types of FireWire hard drive can vary considerably from one to another - they have been optimised for some particular aspect of external storage - the following is designed to help you choose the best hard drive to suit your purposes and your purse!
FireWire hard drives are differentiated by a number of factors, which are suited to certain tasks.
Usually people looking for a FireWire hard drive are looking either to back up their existing hard drive / add some extra space for their files and data or use them for the storage of digital video / audio files / streams.
When working with digital video, data is required to flow from the hard drive in a constant, consistent and fast manner - thus in order to get the best quality and without losing frames you need a good fast hard drive.
All FireWire Hard drives have their speed and performance expressed in terms of the following specifications.

FireWire Hard Drive specifications
1. Spin speed : - this is measured in RPM and is either 4,200, 5,400 or 7,200 RPM. The greater the RPM the faster the drive can send information to the computer, or receive it from a digital camera, but also the faster the drive the more expensive it will be.
2. Access time :- this is measured in ns (nano seconds) - this plays a smaller role than spin speed, but for digital video it will make a difference. The lower the value the better - however this is also linked to the cost.
3. Sustained transfer rate :- this is measured in terms of megabits/s and is of most importance in digital video where data is required to be transferred at a near constant speed - for backing up of data and for extra storage this is less of a problem (see burst transfer rates below) for digital video it is recommended to look for greater than 30Mb/s, for backup or storage around 20 Mb/s is fine.
4. Burst transfer rate :- similar to sustained rate, also measured in Mb/s, this is how a measure or how fast the drive can send and receive smaller packets of information down the FireWire cable - this factor is not as important in digital video as video requires a sustained rather than burst transfer. For storage or backup needs aim for the fastest possible speed - up to 300Mb/s.

Portable Hard Drives
A portable FireWire hard drive is one designed with one feature in mind - portability. Our range of portable hard drives are powered by the FireWire port, meaning no extra wires for you to carry. Due to their decreased size you will not get the speed that can be achieved from desktop versions. They have a slower RPM, longer access time and slower transfer rates. After much testing of these devices they are recommended for all digital video and storage needs - however they will be significantly slower than their larger relatives and will cost a lot more.

WHAT IS A FIREWIRE DVD-R AND DVD-RW?
DVD-R and DVD-RW drives enable you to record digital information to a DVD disc in one of two ways. Either as data which can store up to 4.7GB of information on a single disk - that\'s up to 8 CD\'s worth!) or as DVD format. This facility can enable you to import digital video from a camcorder via FireWire, then record you movies to a DVD that you can send to your colleagues/friends etc - which they can then play in a standard DVD player!. This has opened up the DVD market to home and business users alike without the expensive production costs normally associated with DVDs. With the right software designers, photographers and the general public can produce DVD slide shows for presentations, reports or even as a CV.
DVD storage is becoming a much bigger technology as the need for storage keeps growing. On a DVD you can store up to 2 hours or perfect video, or 8 CD\'s worth of audio, or 4.7GB of data. The cost of this technology is still quite high but has dropped by half in the last 6 months making it much more accessible for the general public.
There are two types of DVD writer - a DVD-R (writer) and a DVD RW (rewriter) - the difference between the two is that the RW model will let you write over disk that you have already used - a good way of reducing costs on media. A Turing machine can compute everything, a usual computer program can compute. Less efficient - but the computation allows a mathematical analysis of questions like :"What is computable? What is decidable? What is complexity? Input and output of a Turing machine is performed on a doubly infinite band containing 0 or 1\'s. This is the memory of the machine. The machine running here with 3 states does the following in state 2: if the band shows 0: go to state 3, move the band to the left and write 1. If the band shows 1, go to state 1, move the band to the left and write 0. This rule for state 2 can be abbreviated as 2: (3L1) (1L0).
A challenging sport is to find among all Turing machines with n states the "busy beaver", the program, which produces from the empty band a maximum number of consecutive 1\'s before it halts.

Fire Wire
Fire Wire เป็นพลวัติมาตราฐานใหม่ ความเร็วสูง ราคาไม่แพง ติดตั้งได้ง่าย การทำงานแบบ Plug and play Fire Wire รวมกันใน Macs , iMacs , emacs , Power Books , iBooks และ iPod
พอร์ต Fire Wire มีจุดใช้งานหลักบนเครื่อง Macintosh Fire Wire หรือที่นักวิชาการเรียกว่า IEEE 1394 High Performance Serial Bus
มีลักษณะรูปร่างหน้าตาและลักษณะการทำงานคล้าย USB (Universal Serial Bus) มาก แต่ Fire Wire สามารถทำงานที่มีความเร็วสูงกว่า USB มาก (ปัจจุบันมี Data Tranfer Rate 400 Mbps (หรือ 40 เมกะบิต ต่อวินาที))

อะไรคือ Target Disk Mode?
ปกติเครื่อง Mac นั้นสามารถใช้ Start Up Disk ได้หลายแบบ เช่น การ Boot จาก CD, จาก diskette (เครื่องรุ่นเก่า), จาก SCSI External hard drive, Network และจาก Fire wire Device... ในความสามารถของ Fire wire (iLink/IEEE 1394) ที่มาทดแทน SCSI ทำให้เครื่องแมคที่มี Fire wire (built-in) สามารถเชื่อมต่อกับแมคอีกเครื่องที่มี Fire wire (built-in) โดยทำให้อีกเครื่องเป็น Hard -disk ได้ ซึ่งเป็นการต่อแบบ P-to-P (Peer to Peer) คือการต่อเชื่อมระหว่างเครื่องแมคสองเครื่อง

How to connection ?
Connector Types (จากซ้ายไปขวา)
- 4 pins เป็นหัวแบบ 4 pins ซึ่งนิยมใช้กันในกล้อง DV Camcorder, Digital Camera ซึ่งเป็นแบบไม่มีกำลังไฟในสาย
- Card Bus เป็นตัวต่อที่นิยมใช้กับ Fire wire PCMCIA Card หรือที่เรียกกันง่าย ๆ ว่า PC Card มีลักษณะหัวแบน เพราะความบางของ PC Card
- 6 pins หาก Mac คุณมี Fire wire (built-in) คุณจะพบ connector ตัวเมียแบบ 6 pins ซึ่งเป็นแบบมีไฟในตัว และมักจะพบใน Fire wire Media Storage ต่าง ๆ เช่น CDRW, External hard -drive, MO Drive etc.
แต่เนื่องจาก connector ตัวเมียของ Apple ที่จะใช้ Target Disk Mode นั้นเป็นแบบ 6 pins ทั้งสองด้าน ไม่สามารถใช้สายที่ 4 pins-6 pins ที่แถมมากับเครื่องได้ (ปกติใช้กับกล้อง DV Camcorder) ดังนั้นควรซื้อสายแบบ 6 pins-6 pins เพื่อต่อที่ Fire wire Port ระหว่างแมคทั้งสองเครื่อง

What Next ?
เมื่อได้สาย Fire wire แบบ 6 pins ทั้งสองหัวได้แล้ว 1. ทำการ shutdown เครื่องที่ต้องการทำ Target Disk Mode 2. ทำการเสียบสาย Fire wire ที่เครื่อง Mac ทั้งสองเครื่อง 3. เมื่อเสียบจนแน่นเรียบร้อยแล้ว ให้กดปุ่มเปิด Power เครื่องที่ต้องการทำ Target Disk Mode และทำการกดปุ่ม T ที่ Keyboard ค้างไว้ขณะที่เปิดเครื่องอยู่ จนมีสัญลักษณ์ Fire wire สีเหลืองบนพื้นสีเหลืองวิ่งอยู่รอบจอ หากเป็นเครื่อง iBook, Power book จะเห็นแถบกำลังไฟอยู่ด้านล่าง ซึ่งในเครื่องแมคอีกเครื่องจะเห็น hard drive ของเครื่อง Mac ที่ทำ Target Disk Mode และสามารถใช้งานได้เหมือนเป็น hard -disk อีกตัว ซึ่งจะมี hard disk icon ขึ้นในเครื่อง

เมื่อใช้งาน Target Disk Mode เสร็จเรียบร้อยแล้วและต้องการยกเลิกการทำ Target Disk Mode เพียงแค่ shutdown เครื่องที่ทำ Target Disk Mode ถอดสาย Fire wire ออก เพียงแค่นั้นเครื่องแมคก็สามารถใช้งานได้ตามปกติ
Note:
การใช้งาน Target Disk Mode มีประโยชน์ได้หลายอย่าง เช่น การ copy ตัว System จากอีกเครื่องไปอีกเครื่อง ซึ่งใช้ในกรณีที่ System ของอีกเครื่องเสียหาย หรือแม้กระทั่งการในงาน Video ที่ต้องการพื้นที่ hard disk เป็นจำนวนมาก การ copy ไฟล์ ซึ่งมีความเร็วมากกว่าระบบ Ethernet มาก

เงื่อนไขของการใช้ Target Disk Mode คือเครื่องแมคตั้งแต่ G3 ที่มี Fire wire แบบ Built-in หรือ On Board หากใช้แบบการ์ด Fire wire จะไม่สามารถทำ Target Disk Mode ได้
หากต้องการบูทเครื่องด้วย Start Up จาก Fire wire External Hard drive ด้วยการกด command + option + shift + delete หรือสั่งจาก Start Up Disk ใน Control Panel
สรุปก็คือไฟร์ไวร์ (Fire wire) เป็นพอร์ตมาตรฐานใหม่ความเร็วสูง ที่พัฒนาโดยบริษัทแอปเปิล และบริษัทเท็กซัส อินสทรูเมนท์ โดยสามารถรองรับการเชื่อมต่ออุปกรณ์ต่อพ่วงได้มากกว่า 63 อุปกรณ์ และเป็นมาตรฐาน IEEE 1394 นอกจากนี้ ยังสามารถส่งถ่ายข้อมูลได้ในระดับ 400 เมกะบิตต่อวินาที

ในปี ค.ศ. 1965 Dr.Gordon Moore ที่เฝ้าสังเกตอุตสาหกรรมความหนาแน่นของทรานซิสเตอร์ การสังเกตนี้ที่กลายเป็นชื่อเสียง เป็นกฎของ Moore และเกือบ 40 ปี ต่อมามันยังคงเป็นความถูกต้องอย่างตรงไปตรงมา
เมื่อเร็วๆนี้ การเจริญเติบโตที่ก้าวในความหนาแน่นทรานซิสเตอร์เข้าไปใน CPU การเพิ่มขนาดซึ่งคล้ายกัน โปรแกรมการกระทำเหมืองข้อมูล , โกดังข้อมูล
