The University of Southampton Golden Jubilee Scholarships




The University of Southampton is delighted to announce the creation of its


Golden Jubilee Scholarships for international students.




To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the University's Royal Charter,


a number of special awards are on offer for international undergraduate and


postgraduate students beginning their studies at the University in October 2002.


Most awards will cover full tuition fees for the duration of the course.




Scholarships are available in the following faculties:




Celebrating success at Graduation 2001


Engineering and Applied Science




MPhil/PhD: Two awards are available at postgraduate research


(MPhil/PhD) level to applicants to any of the faculty's departments (Department of


Electronics and Computer Science, Department of Civil and Environmental


Engineering, School of Engineering Science, Institute of Sound and Vibration


Research, Optoelectronic Research Centre). The awards will cover full


tuition fees for the duration of the course, subject to satisfactory progress.


All applications considered as part of the normal admissions process (no separate


application necessary).






Foundation Year: A number of bursaries worth £3000 (contributing


towards tuition fees) are available to students applying for the Engineering


Foundation course. Awarded on academic merit for one year only-


standard fees apply to each of the subsequent years of the degree.


Applicants are requested to complete a scholarship application form, available


from the Course Director, Dr Anna Barney, foundyr@soton.ac.uk.






Mathematical Studies




Bachelor's degree: Three awards are available to international


students entering in 2002 on one of the Mathematics with Business Applications


undergraduate programmes. Full tuition fees will be paid for each year of study.


To be eligible, applicants must have firmly accepted a place by 1 May 2002.


The awards will be made to academically outstanding applicants on


the basis of their UCAS application form (no separate application necessary).

Medicine, Health and Biological Sciences




MPhil/PhD: One award is available at postgraduate research


(MPhil/PhD) level to applicants to the Faculty's School of Biological Science.


The awards will cover full tuition fees for the duration of the course, subject to


satisfactory progress. All applications considered as part of the normal


admissions process (no separate application necessary).

Law




Bachelor's degree: Two awards are available to applicants for


the LLB. The awards will cover full tuition fees for the duration of the course,


subject to satisfactory progress. All applications considered as part of the

Science




Bachelor's degree: Two awards are available to those applying


for a bachelor's degree in any of the Faculty's departments (Chemistry,


Geography, School of Ocean and Earth Science, Physics and Astronomy). The


awards will cover full tuition fees for the duration of the course, subject to


satisfactory progress. All applications considered as part of the normal


admissions process (no separate application necessary).




,b>Postgraduate Master's degree: Two awards are available to those


applying for a Master's degree in the Faculty's School of Ocean and Earth


Science. The awards will cover full tuition fees for the duration of the


course. All applications considered as part of the normal admissions process


(no separate application necessary).






MPhil/PhD: Two awards are available to those applying to do


postgraduate research (MPhil/PhD) in the Faculty's School of Ocean and Earth


Science. The awards will cover full tuition fees for the duration of the


course, subject to satisfactory progress. All applications considered as part of the


normal admissions process (no separate application necessary).




Social Sciences




MPhil/PhD: Funding will be made available to provide some support


for postgraduate research (MPhil/PhD) applications, possibly in the form of


contributions towards tuition fees. As a result, amounts available will vary-


applications will be considered by the Faculty on a case-by-case basis.


Applications to any of the Faculty's departments (Economics, Education,


Management, Politics, Psychology, Sociology and Social Policy, Social


Statistics, Social Work Studies) will be considered. All applications considered


as part of the normal admissions process (no separate application necessary).

Application procedure: All applications, except those for the


Engineering Foundation year, are considered as part of the normal


admissions process with no separate application necessary.




Deadline for consideration: Offers made (conditional or


unconditional) must be accepted by 1 May 2002.




* The Golden Jubilee awards are available only to students entering the


University in October 2002

* Decisions on the recipients of awards will be made by academic departments


and will be final


* The Golden Jubilee awards are only open to students designated


as "overseas" for fees purposes
