สาวๆอยากผอมเพื่อให้ตัวเองดูดีและมั่นใจใน แถมเตะตาชายหนุ่ม แต่ปลาบู่ในแนวปะการังที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก Great Barrier Reef ในประเทศออสเตรเลียจะต้องรักษารูปร่างให้เพรียวเพราะความอยู่รอด
ดร.มาเรียน หว่อง (Dr.Marian Wong) นักชีววิทยาทางทะเล (Marine Biologist) จากมหาวิทยาลัยเจมส์ คุกในรัฐควีนแลนด์กล่าวว่าขนาดรอบเอวที่เพิ่มขึ้นของปลาบู่นั้นหมายถึงเคราะห์ร้าย ไม่เหมือนกับคนเราถ้าอ้วนอาจหมายถึงสารพัดโรคกำลังมาเยือน แต่ปลาบู่นั้นขนาดอ้วนหมายถึง เธอจะถูกไล่ออก! ในสังคมปลาบู่ (Goby fish) แล้ว ขนาดร่างกาย หมายถึง สถานภาพทางสังคม เนื่องจากปลาบู่จะอยู่รวมกันโดยมี ปลาบู่สามี 1 ตัว ปลาบู่ภรรยาหลวง 1 ตัว และที่เหลือจะเป็นปลาบู่สาวๆบริสุทธิ์ในฝูงอีกไม่เกิน 15 ตัว เฉพาะปลาบู่ภรรยาหลวงเท่านั้นที่สามารถจ๊ะจ๋ามีอะไรๆกับปลาบู่สามีได้ ส่วนปลาบู่สาวๆที่เหลือก็ได้แต่แอบมอง (นั่นแน่ะ!!) และถ้าหากปลาบู่ภรรยาหลวงมีอันเป็นไป ปลาบู่สาวที่มีขนาดใหญ่เป็นอันดับสองเท่านั้นที่จะได้เลื่อนขั้นเป็นภรรยาหลวงลำดับถัดมา ดร.มาเรียน หว่อง และทีมงานพบว่าปลาบู่ภรรยาหลวงนั้น จะมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าปลาบู่สาวตัวที่ใหญ่ที่สุด 5% และปลาบู่สาวตัวนั้นก็จะใหญ่กว่าตัวรองลงไปอีก 5% และเป็นอย่างนั้นไปเรื่อยๆจนถึงตัวสุดท้ายที่เล็กที่สุด ในการทดลองที่สถานีวิจัยลิซาร์ดไอร์แลนด์ ในแนวปะการัง Great Barrier Reef ดร.มาเรียนลงไปให้อาหารปลาบู่สาวๆในฝูงด้วยมือ เพื่อจะดูซิว่าจะเกิดอะไรขึ้นถ้าพวกมันเกิดอ้วนขึ้นมา ในช่วงแรกๆนั้น ปลาบู่สาวพวกนั้นกินกันอย่างสนุกสนานแทบท้องแตกตาย แต่แล้วพวกมันก็ปฏิเสธไม่แตะต้องอาหารอีกเลย ในช่วงที่ย่างเข้าสัปดาห์ที่สอง ในอีกการทดลองหนึ่ง ดร.มาเรียนได้เอาปลาบู่ต่างขนาดไปเพิ่มเข้าในฝูง ผลการทดลองส่วนใหญ่ปรากฏว่า ปลาบู่ผู้มาเยือนที่อ้วนเกินหน้าเกินตาเจ้าถิ่นจะถูกขับไล่ให้ออกไปจากแนวปะการังอย่างรวดเร็ว การขับไล่นั้นเป็นไปอย่างรุนแรงมีทั้งขั้นคางเหลืองและขั้นตาย เพราะปลาบู่ภรรยาหลวงรับไม่ได้! ดร.มาเรียน จึงสรุปการทดลองแรก ที่ปลาไม่กินอาหารไม่ใช่เพราะปลาอิ่มนะ แต่เนื่องจากพวกมันกลัวว่าถ้ากินเยอะไปแล้วเดี๋ยวจะอ้วนล้ำเส้นเจ๊ปลาบู่ภรรยาหลวงเขา และถ้าเจ้าหล่อนมาเห็นเข้าพวกเธอก็จะโดนไล่ออกจากฝูง เห็นได้ชัดว่า ปลาบู่นั้นยอมรับการคุกคามและการลงโทษจากปลาบู่ภรรยาหลวงผู้มีอำนาจ เพื่อสามารถให้อยู่ร่วมกันในสังคมลำดับชั้นของมันอย่างสงบสุข ดร.มาเรียนกล่าว ดูซิ ขนาด ใครคิดว่าไม่สำคัญ ผลงานชิ้นนี้ได้ตีพิมพ์ใน Proceedings of the Royal Society of London แปลจาก Richard Macey.
